Of all the talents I do not possess, the single most mystifying to me is writing music; followed closely by painting something other than stick figures and finding a willing literary agent to sell my books. Even though I sing a mean karaoke and play fabulous air guitar, having the ability to imagine an original melody is beyond my God-given gifts… lyrics maybe, but a foot-tapping series of chords just ain’t in there anywhere.

If I were to write music, I could not possibly be more successful than a man born in Grand Saline, Texas named Christopher Dwayne Tomlin. Pouring salt in my non-musically-creative wound (I just had to use that phrase), this guy is flat-out prolific, so much so that he has been documented as the most sung songwriter in the world. Let that roll around in your brain for a while. Does that mean even more than Barry Manilow? Can it be so?

Yes it can!

It is my assertion that less than 3.75% of church services in America do not include at least one of his songs.

“Prone to exaggeration, Lord, I feel it, Prone to embellish the facts I quote”; this is why my statistics are askew. Maybe it’s just my church or maybe I am not paying attention to the song attribution on the bottom left of the lyric projection.

Who has not sung “Our God” on the top of their lungs or from the bottom of their heart? If not, you may be worshiping at 1st Comrade Church of Leningrad.

(The preceding opinion is not necessarily that of our managing editor)

How about one of these psalms to Our Lord:

  • Holy is the Lord
  • How Great is Our God
  • Indescribable
  • Made To Worship
  • Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)
  • Jesus Messiah
  • I Will Rise
  • Whom Shall I Fear [God of Angel Armies]
  • Love Ran Red
  • White Flag

Do you raise the “White Flag” of surrender?

“We lift the cross, lifted high – lifted high.”

Oh yeah and this one.

Thus ends the “live” portion of this article. If that dos not inspire you, it may be time to check your pulse.

Just in writing this, not only is my pulse raising, my eyes are filled with tears of joy.

I will not use up any column-inches to list his multitudinous Billboard, Dove or Grammy nominations & awards. May I suggest the encyclopedia of our times (Wikipedia) , for these and other facts about the “songwriter of our worship”.
