Planned Parenthood recently published their 2015-2016 annual report and an infographic courtesy of Alice Paul Group helps visualize the extent of the report. According to the report, Planned Parenthood performed 328,348 abortions, up from 323,999 last year. The amount of revenue they generated accounted for $1.354 Billion, and Planned Parenthood received over $500 million in government funding; all of this accounted for over $77 million in profit.
What exactly does this mean for the pro-life movement?
For one, while there has been some momentum we still have a great way to go. Defunding Planned Parenthood’s government funding cuts off around 30% of their funding, yet the majority of funding still comes from their services and donations. The movement will still have to figure out creative ways to totally shut down its revenue.
Second, the report states that abortion only accounts for 3% of their services. Live Action released a viral video last year debunking the 3% abortion myth. According to the video, “Planned Parenthood’s marketshare for abortions in the United States is currently 34.9%.”
Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life commented on the statistics in a recent press release:
“Planned Parenthood aborted over 328,000 babies last year, yet it still received $554 million in public funds. That’s almost $1,700 per dead child. There’s no reason why taxpayers should be coerced into sending even one dollar to this killing machine. Congress needs to stop subsidizing Planned Parenthood and it needs to do it now!”
“Planned Parenthood admits in its annual report that it performs more abortions than breast exams, more abortions than pap tests, and more abortions than ‘well woman exams. But even if they sold only one abortion a year, no amount of other activity can make up for that atrocity, and the killing of a single baby is enough reason to shut them down.”
Chuck Donovan, president of the Charlotte Lozier Institute, the education and research arm of the Susan B. Anthony List wrote the following for National Review:
By itself, the trend lines are clear. Planned Parenthood understandably wishes to downplay its role in carrying out abortions and harvesting the vital organs of the unborn for experimental uses. Equally understandably, it wishes at the same time to play up its role in providing services that most people see as beneficent or mainstream: cancer screenings, STD diagnosis and treatment, and provision of contraceptives. From time to time, the organization’s long history of leadership in movements for eugenics and population control has spurred controversy, and rightly so, but it is safe to say that Planned Parenthood’s national and international status in the vanguard of abortion promotion lies at the center of debate.
